Sour vapes have a loyal following among ZampleBox members, and in the 2017 ZampleBox E-Liquid Awards one bottle ran away with the category. Strawberry Sour Straws by Bazooka took Best Sour E-Liquid of 2017, and it won easily.

We did not pick the winner. Members voted, and this is the record of how the category turned out, what the flavor tastes like and where to look if you want a sour vape today.

Short version: Bazooka’s Strawberry Sour Straws won Best Sour E-Liquid of 2017 by a wide margin. It captures red strawberry candy straws dusted in sweet and sour sugar. Bazooka is not sold on our site today, but our sour and strawberry collections cover the same ground.

The winner: Strawberry Sour Straws by Bazooka

Bazooka took a familiar candy, red strawberry sour straws rolled in sweet and sour powder, and turned it into an e-liquid. Our verdict at the time was blunt: this one would knock your socks off.

What set it apart was balance. Sour vapes can easily tip into harsh or cloying, and Bazooka got the mix right. The category was not close, and our feeling back then was that anyone who had not voted for it probably had not tried it yet.

What makes a good sour vape

A sour e-liquid usually starts with a fruit or candy base and adds a tart, puckering edge. The best ones keep three things in balance:

  • The fruit. It should taste like the fruit it names, not a vague sweet note. Strawberry is the classic pairing.
  • The sugar. Sour candy is sweet under the tartness, and a good juice keeps that sweetness in the background.
  • The pucker. Enough tart and tangy bite to wake up your taste buds without turning harsh.

Sour candy flavors tend to be sweet, and sweet e-liquids can gunk up coils faster than lighter flavors. If the taste starts to fade or turn burnt, it may be time for a fresh coil. Our guide on when to change your vape coils explains the signs.
