Pokémon GO: Catch the Fever
When Pokémon GO launched in the US in July 2016, it didn’t take long to reach our office. Our post at the time summed it up: “I’m playing it. The office is playing it. We’re on the fast track to becoming Pokemon Masters.” Then we asked who else was getting on the hype train.
Here’s a look back at that summer, plus a few etiquette notes for adults who vape while they’re out exploring.
The summer everyone went outside
Pokémon GO turned the real world into a game board. You walked around to find Pokémon, spun PokéStops at local landmarks and battled at gyms, so for plenty of players the game meant lunchtime walks and evening trips to the park.
For adults who vape, more time outdoors also meant more moments to think about where and how to vape around other people.
Out and about: etiquette for adults who vape
- Check the rules first. Many parks, trails and public spaces restrict vaping, and the rules vary by state and city.
- Give crowds some room. Popular stops drew groups of players, so step away before you exhale, and never blow vapor toward other people.
- Keep your eyes up. Stop walking before you check your screen or refill your device, especially near traffic.
- Carry batteries properly. Keep spare batteries in a case, never loose in a pocket with keys or coins. Our guide to batteries for vaping has more.
- Mind the heat. Summer sun and hot cars are hard on e-liquid and devices, so keep your gear in the shade. Our summer vaping tips go further.

Where things stand now
Pokémon GO kept a big following long after that first summer, and the rules around vaping have tightened in the meantime. The federal minimum age for all tobacco and vaping products has been 21 since December 2019, and where you can vape depends on your state and city, so check local rules before you head out. Whatever you’re chasing, keep your vapor to yourself.
