For Sage Prengel, known on Instagram as @aprengelchip, vape tricks were about more than big clouds. His passion for tricking grew out of the calm, almost meditative focus it gave him, which is how this feature got its name.

Meet Sage
When we talked, Sage had been tricking for three years and had taught plenty of other trickers in Washington State. Off the clock, he was rebuilding a 1977 Datsun 280Z alongside friends with their own project cars, gaming on Xbox and flying helicopters. He was training for his private pilot license at the Olympia airport, with a commercial license as the goal.
He switched from cigarettes to vaping by chance: he wandered into a store that was being turned into a vape shop, and a week later he went back and bought his first device.
In his own words
- Why tricking: Landing something new gave him a sense of accomplishment, and he loved learning how the air moved.
- Teaching: His favorite part was watching a struggling student turn into a master, until he found himself learning from them. There is always something to learn, he said.
- Favorite trickers: Bmitch and G_Vapes for style and creativity, and Nate_Vapor for simplicity and photography.
- Best conditions: Still air, good lighting and a dark background. When the air was just right, he preferred outdoors, where the backdrop made the photo.
- Hardest part: Keeping up with new tricks and styles. In competition, if you can’t adapt, you’re out by the second or third round.

Where things stand now
Vape tricks still have a following among adult vapers, but federal law has set the minimum age at 21 since December 2019, and the rules on where you can vape have tightened in many places.
