Demonetization and How It Affects Vaping

If you watched vaping channels on YouTube in the late 2010s, you probably heard creators talk about demonetization. In this video, Chris explained what it is and why it mattered so much to the vaping community.

What demonetization means
YouTube creators can earn money from the ads that run on their videos. When a video is demonetized, YouTube decides it isn’t suitable for most advertisers, so it earns little or no ad revenue. For a channel that depends on that income, a run of demonetized videos can make it hard to keep going.
What happened to vaping videos
At the time, creators all over YouTube were talking about the platform’s algorithms and its behind-the-scenes decisions about which videos got shown to viewers and which got buried. Then vaping itself came into the spotlight. YouTube began treating vaping content as inappropriate for ads, and videos that mentioned or discussed vaping were demonetized as a result.
For vaping channels, that was a double hit. Reviews, how-tos and community videos earned less, and many creators said their videos had become harder for viewers to find.
Why it mattered to viewers
For many adult vapers, YouTube creators were a go-to source for reviews and how-tos on coils, batteries and flavors. When those channels struggled, that hands-on information got harder to come by. That is one reason we keep our own guides in one place, from our beginner’s guide to vaping to recommended batteries.
Where things stand now
Platform rules for vaping content are still strict, and they change often, so creators keep adjusting. Major ad platforms also restrict ads for vaping products. You will always find our latest guides on the ZampleBox blog. Once again, thanks so much for tuning in and reading.
